Metaphorizing Places in Classical Turkish Poetry: Idol Houses

Abstract: Classical Turkish poetry is important in terms of reflecting the cultural and sociological structure of Ottoman society together with different images and dreams in texts. Places that symbolize the general characteristic structure of a society and nation have also been the main material of poems. In the texts in which Divan poetry put love at the center, idols, one of the objects that symbolize beauty, are among them, when they use concrete signs in their depictions of the beloved, the main actor of this phenomenon. Concepts such as sanem and nigar are products of human art and represent perfect beauty aesthetically. The places of worship of the Christian religion (churches, monasteries, etc.) in which these objects, which are seen as the symbol of beauty, are located, together with the cities and countries identified with these concepts, are frequently used as an element of simile in classical Turkish poetry. The places where these objects are located have taken shape around this meaning. In this study, by examining the texts of classical Turkish poetry, the place of idol and idol concepts in the meaning world of this poem is tried to be determined.

Abstract: Altti Kuusamo’s article deals with the theme of loss and melancholy in Charles Baudelaire’s famous poem The Swan (Le Cygne, 1859) taking seriously into account one of the central subject matters, the image of the La Place du Carrousel, which referred to the courtyard between the Louvre and the Tuileries Palace and which had turned out to be a wasteland during Baudelaire’s mature work, in 1850s. In this way my article does not concentrate on the favourite subject of the flaneur in Charles Baudelaire’s poems, not even in the manner which Walter Benjamin made so fashionable. Instead, I’ll draw attention to the mental topography of the Carrousel site in Paris which seemed to be important to Baudelaire and also to his friends during 1840s. The feeling of the deserted quarters is in a way “humming” in the backyard of the Baudelaire’s poem. The motivation for my article lies in pondering why so many literary analysts of the poem, for example Walter Benjamin, Jean Starobinski, Yves Bonnefoy, Jonathan Culler, Stephanie Bundy and Ross Chambers, just to name some central literary figures, have not taken into account those images and metaphors which surround the name Carrousel in the poem. In the poem metaphors which are connected to ancient myths sweep the deserted paving stones of Place du Carrousel and illustrate the situation in which the demolition of the houses and streets of the western side of Louvre had taken place. Also the themes of loss and exile are closely tied to the central imagery of Carrousel close to Louvre.

A Literary Review of Neorealism in British and American Literature

Abstract: In the wake of postmodernism, writers sit at an anxious crossroads where the language representation of postmodernism meets the lyrical realism of Balzac and Flaubert, and a few critics have attempted to anchor a realist grounding for the new directions of novels. In this sense, the appeal of the return of realism is recognized as congenial to experimental realism—neorealism, embodying experiments in forms, styles, and modes of valuing, with mimesis dominant. Entering the 21st century, neorealism has won certain celebrations from some Chinese scholars, but its descriptions, designations, and practices in British and American literature display some confusion and ambiguity that revolve around the present studies of neorealism in China. This paper, thus, aims to solve these questions by exploring its cause and effect, and pointing out the research gap between foreign scholars and Chinese, likewise with an attempt to provide an individual but academic description of this new form. It concludes that neorealism is a new form of realism in the postmodern context, integrating the self-consciousness of modernism and language dominant of postmodernism, with an attempt to articulate and evaluate the relationships between the individual self and “signified” social reality in the textualized world. In the postmodern context, multiple worlds are textualized in fiction and the reality is not absolute but the “signified” one understood by the majority. The major concerns of British neorealism fiction reside more in “self” due to its British tradition of (liberal) humanity, different from American neorealism with politics dominant.

Abstract: In recent years, with the support of national policies, Chinese drama pedagogy stayed in a significant stage of development. The preschool period is the social development stage of young children. The social development of young children affects all aspects of psychological development and directly influences the final formation of children's personalities. This paper has preschool children (3-6 years old) as participants and uses experiential reading picture book thematic curriculum as examples. Based on these participants and examples, they argue how to apply dramatic play in preschool education for young children through describing and discussing the drama pedagogy from picture books to process drama in early childhood education and through exploring the theoretical significance of children’s rights and protection and young children’s socialization in early childhood education. This paper also helps preschool children better adapt to their future social life, learn social rules, enrich their positive emotions, and promote the full development of young children's moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and social aspects through proper guidance.

Abstract: Since the beginning of the 21st century, with the rapid development of the Internet and the film industry, more and more Chinese films and TV series have been exported to foreign countries. However, many films that have won praises in China have got low ratings after going abroad. Subtitle translation is one of the main reasons. As an indispensable part of films, subtitle translation has also attracted extensive attention in recent years. People are paying more and more attention to the quality of subtitle translation in a movie. This article will focus on the three rules of Skopostheorie, which are Skopos Rule, Coherence Rule and Coherence Rule. The common ground of two perspectives is based on the three rules of Skopostheorie and language receivers. This article will select the English version of Youth which is a famous film in China as the research object and analyze the subtitle translation strategies in Chinese movies from the perspective of linguistics and culture, and advocate different strategies for different situations to achieve the best translation. From these two perspectives, there are several practical strategies can be used in subtitle translation. In addition to the application of Skopostheorie in translation, it also has great significance for Chinese movie.

Abstract: There are many “urban diseases” caused by the purposeless expansion of contemporary cities, such as ecological damage, lack of characteristics, and the same face of cities, which urgently need a new urban planning and construction method to solve the problem. Under this background, “landscape city” was put forward by Qian Xuesen in 1993. Its concept has made great contributions to the ecological and characteristic construction of Chinese cities. Chinese traditional landscape painting is a unique cultural and spiritual content with Chinese characteristics. At the same time, there is a “heterogeneous isomorphism” relationship between Chinese landscape painting and landscape cities. Landscape painting also reflects the ideal way of living of Chinese people since ancient times. Therefore, applying the idea of “harmony between human and nature” in Chinese landscape painting to the ecological construction of landscape cities, and applying landscape culture and spirit to the characteristic expression and artistic conception construction of landscape cities can create ecological cities with unique Chinese characteristics. Taking the construction of Fuzhou landscape city as an example, this paper explores the path of modern city’s “landscape”, summarizes and puts forward some methods of ecological city planning and construction with Chinese characteristics, which has certain guiding significance for the construction of modern “landscape city”. At the same time, it points out that the construction of landscape city with unique Chinese culture is an excellent path to realize the ideal living environment with Chinese characteristics.
